Wichtige Informationen:

Important Information:
Due to the current situation all teaching activities are held online. To participate, enrollment via the LSF is mandatory. More information can be found on the website of the faculty of physics.

Essentials of advanced astrophysics

SS 2020

Time & Dates

Tuesdays 09:45 – 11:15 s.t.
Thursdays 14:15 – 15:45 s.t.
on zoom (see below). Weekly between 21.04.2020 and 21.07.2020.

  • 11.06.2020 (Fronleichnam)

Registration is required and can be done via the LSF until 04.05.2020. Upon registration, the enrollment key for the moodle will be emailed to your campus email address.

Important information such as the password for the lecture material or the password to attend the online lectures will be distributed only via the moodle.

More information including username/passwords, literature, and more can be found on the moodle.

20.04.2020: All further communication will be channeled through the moodle. Please enroll via the LSF and contact us in case you have not received the enrollment key.
  • 30.03.2020: This lecture is still planned to take place during the times noted above. Most likely this will be happening online via life lectures on Zoom. The LMU and the physics faculty are currently coordinating the next steps. Further information will be centrally announced and news about this lecture will be posted here.
  • 10.03.2020: News or updates will be posted here.

For the online lectures we will be using Zoom. It is recommended to use the zoom application that is available for most operating systems, but there is also the option to join from the browser.

The zoom support pages have a range of video introductions to the systems. You can find them in English and in German.

Zoom etiquette:

Please follow the guidelines below for our zoom lectures.

  • Set your true name as username. Otherwise you are not recognizable. We might have to remove participants without proper name if problems arise.
  • Stay muted unless you're talking to reduce background noise. Participants are muted by default. If you want to ask a question, use the "Raise Hand" button in the participats panel first. If the lecturer does not notice, unmute yourself and state that you have a question.
  • Use the annotation feature only if you are asking a question and erase the drawing immediately after.
  • Check your internet speed, for example on zoom.us/test. If you are on public wifi you may need to keep your camera off to improve quality. If possible use an ethernet (wired) connection.
  • Be aware of what's in your background if you turn on video. Have a blank wall behind you or turn on the virtual background.
  • If features like annotation or unmuting are misuesd, we will have to deactivate them for everyone.

This course also serves as the introductory course for the IMPRS on Astrophysics. The first half of the lectures (including 02.06.2020) will be given by Prof. Dr. Til Birnstiel. The second half (04.06.2020 and after) will be given by Prof. Dr. Walter Dehnen.

Course language: English

Topics covered in the lecture will include the physics of:

  • stars
  • planets
  • interstellar medium
  • galaxies
  • dark matter
  • large scale structure
  • cosmology
  • other topics of advanced astrophysics

Lecture slides and recordings will be posted shortly after the lecture on the moodle.

Exercises take place Thursdays at 16:15 (s.t.) between 30.04. and 17.07. via Zoom.

The exercise sheets can be found here. Login information and further details can be found on the moodle.
